How to Choose Your Own Keywords

One of the most common things I get asked as a freelance professional is if I choose keywords on behalf of clients. Sometimes I do, but those clients often pay me more. Budgetary concerns can be an issue for start-ups who want to increase their online visibility but don't have the extra funds to do it.

Choosing the Right Keywords Is Important

Choosing the right keywords for your content marketing is important. You can also do it yourself. However, it is also important to know that this is not overnight magic. Unless you're buying an ad, a single blog post with the right keywords and right density won't rocket you to page one on the search engines. SEO is about more than your keywords. It's an entire strategy.

How to Choose Your Own Keywords

I cover keyword choice and other basic SEO concepts in a 1.5 hour webinar that you can get here. Here are some tips:

1. Make a list of keywords and think of ways to make them more unique for you. "Lawyer" or "writer" aren't good basic keywords because there's too much competition. Consider adding something unique like your location or your specialty.

2. Check out your competitors. What are they focusing on for their content?

3. Write about what your target market is interested in. This means staying on top of current changes and trends. Become a valued source of information.
